Microsoft Intune Embraces Apple Intelligence

Microsoft recently announced exciting updates regarding Intune’s support for Apple’s new content generation features, collectively known as Apple Intelligence. This integration is set to enhance mobile device management (MDM) and mobile app management (MAM) capabilities for users of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

What’s New?

Apple’s latest updates, particularly in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, introduce innovative features that allow users to generate content effortlessly. Microsoft Intune is now equipped to manage these features effectively, offering organizations more control over their mobile environments.

“Our ongoing goal is to enable you to balance productivity and security in your environment.”

Major Updates to Intune

Intune’s new capabilities focus on supervised devices, particularly those enrolled in Apple’s Device Enrollment Program (ADE). For these devices, administrators can configure settings related to Apple Intelligence in the Restrictions payload and Math Settings declaration. Notably, these settings require devices to be supervised.

For personal or BYO devices, MDM controls are not provided. However, Intune MAM controls are available for both managed and unmanaged devices. This flexibility allows organizations to customize their approach based on their deployment model.

Key Configuration Controls

With the rollout of iOS 18.1 and its counterparts, Intune will support several configuration controls:

  • Allow Genmoji: Prohibits creating new Genmoji on supervised devices.
  • Allow Image Playground: Controls the use of image generation features.
  • Allow Personalized Handwriting Results: Prevents the system from generating text in the user’s handwriting.
  • Math Notes Mode: Configures the Math Notes mode in the calculator.

What’s Important to Know

As of September 2024, only the Writing Tools feature is available in MAM protected applications. Other Apple Intelligence features are limited to system applications like Notes and Calculator, which do not support Intune MAM. Organizations need to stay updated on these changes to maximize their use of Intune.

“If you have feedback on these new Intune MDM or MAM capabilities, please let us know in the comments below!”

In conclusion, Microsoft Intune’s support for Apple Intelligence marks a significant step forward. Organizations can now better manage their mobile environments while leveraging the innovative features introduced by Apple.

  • Intune introduces controls for Apple Intelligence features in upcoming OS releases.
