What’s New in Microsoft Planner – May 2025 Update
Microsoft Planner just got a major boost this May 2025. If you’re managing projects in Teams, you’ll love the new features rolling out. From faster status reports to expanded Project Manager views, Planner is evolving to keep your workflows smooth and efficient.
Generate Status Reports in Minutes
Need quick project updates? The new Status Reports feature in Planner within Teams lets you auto-summarize progress, milestones, risks, and next steps instantly. Customize reports for any audience or timeframe, making updates more relevant and impactful.
Getting started is simple: open the Planner app in Teams, pick a premium plan or one with Project Manager that has at least ten tasks. Then, hit the Reports tab, set your reporting period, and add details. The report shows up in a Loop component for real-time coediting, which means teamwork just got easier.
“You can quickly and easily auto-synthesize your plan’s progress, milestones, risks, and next steps, ensuring everyone on your team has shared visibility.”
Currently, this feature is available to English-US customers and requires Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Loop licenses.
Project Manager Now Works Across Multiple Views
Previously, the Project Manager agent was limited to Board view. Now, it’s accessible in Grid, Timeline, and People views too. This means you can assign tasks and manage projects more flexibly.
- Assign tasks to Project Manager in Grid, Board, People, and Timeline views
- Access Project Manager as a plan member in People and Board views
- Drag and drop tasks to assign them easily in Board and People views
Transitioning from Project for the Web to Planner
Big news: starting August 2025, Planner will replace Project for the web. Microsoft is unifying task management under Planner, which offers enhanced features like Goals, Sprints, task history, advanced dependencies, and AI-powered tools such as Copilot and Project Manager agent.
Migration is seamless—no licensing or manual transfer hassles. Users will be automatically redirected to Planner.
“No need to worry about migration or licensing changes—everything transitions seamlessly!”
Admins should prepare users and update resources to reflect this change. Microsoft is also closing feature gaps, like managing non-default environment plans directly in Planner.
Why This Matters for Tech-Savvy Teams
These updates make Planner a powerhouse for project management within Microsoft 365. Enhanced reporting saves time, multi-view Project Manager boosts flexibility, and the upcoming transition simplifies your toolset.
Plus, AI integration means smarter task handling and better insights. If you’re already in the Microsoft ecosystem, these improvements are worth exploring right now.
