Windows 11 26H2 (Build 26300.9278) is in the Release Preview Channel as of August 27, 2026. It is an enablement package on the shared 24H2/25H2 servicing branch, not a reimage. The deadline that matters this month is different: Windows 11 24H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations lose updates on October 13, 2026. 26H2 general availability is later this calendar year. Do not treat Release Preview as the October 13 escape hatch.
What 26H2 actually is
Stephen Lines’s August 27 Windows Insider post (updated August 31) is the source of record for the RP drop. Windows 11, version 26H2 is this year’s annual feature update. Delivery is an enablement package (eKB). 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a servicing branch, so a lot of 26H2 behavior has already been landing in monthly updates. The enablement package mainly turns the version on.
Jason Leznek’s Get ready for Windows 11, version 26H2 post is the IT-pro companion. For devices already on 24H2 or 25H2, Microsoft describes the move as similar to a monthly update: small install, no full reimage, no Autopilot or MDT event. That is the point of the shared branch.
Commercial devices do pick up a few experiences that were optional before and now default on: Windows settings backup, app-specific actions from the taskbar, and some File Explorer enhancements. Those are the things to test in a pilot, not just whether the PC boots.
Release Preview Insiders who meet Windows 11 hardware requirements can take 26H2 from Windows Update (the seeker experience). Commercial Insiders enrolled in Windows Insider Program for Business can stage it with Windows Update client policies and WSUS. Autopatch and Intune are the production channels once 26H2 is generally available. ISOs are available as of the August 31 blog update at aka.ms/wipISO. Microsoft also pointed commercial Insiders at the Windows 11 Preview listing in Azure Marketplace for lab VMs.
The October 13 split
The Insider post’s footnote and the Windows 11 release information table are the numbers.
- 24H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations: end of updates October 13, 2026.
- 24H2 Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session: October 12, 2027.
- 23H2 Home and Pro already reached end of updates. 23H2 Enterprise and Education last until November 10, 2026.
A Pro laptop and an Enterprise desktop on the same 24H2 build are not on the same clock. Mixed-edition fleets need to be segmented now, including client sites that still have a pile of Pro machines next to a smaller Enterprise ring.
25H2 is already a landing zone
25H2 has been generally available since September 30, 2025 (build 26200). Home and Pro on 25H2 are supported until October 12, 2027. Enterprise lasts until October 10, 2028. If a 24H2 Home or Pro device cannot wait for 26H2 general availability, moving it to 25H2 is a supported way to stay current. You do not have to install 26H2 before October 13, and you should not broadly deploy Release Preview just to beat that date.
Once 26H2 ships, it resets the lifecycle the usual way: 24 months for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations; 36 months for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session.
Keep 26H1 off this plan
Windows 11, version 26H1 (build 28000) reached general availability on February 10, 2026. It is a scoped release for new devices with select silicon, currently Qualcomm Snapdragon X2. Microsoft is not offering it as an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2. 26H1 devices will not be able to update to 26H2, because 26H1 is a different Windows core. It also does not support hotpatch.
The August 31 Insider 26H1 Beta and Experimental builds are servicing that branch. They are not a signal that existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs should jump to 26H1. Leave Snapdragon X2 devices on their own ring. Do not fold them into the 26H2 enablement-package pilot.
What to do this month
Inventory edition and version, not just “Windows 11.” Split remaining 24H2 Home/Pro (and Pro Education / Pro for Workstations) from 24H2 Enterprise. Move the Home/Pro remainder to 25H2 or another supported ring before October 13. Stand up a small 26H2 pilot on Release Preview, WSUS, or Intune so you have seen the commercial defaults before GA. That is enough staging for now. The enablement package is the easy part. The edition split is the part that still surprises people in October.
