This is the short follow-up to our July 29 post on the Windows Insider flight certificate expiring August 11, 2026. Back then, Beta and most Experimental minimum builds were still listed as “TBD” on the certificate-renewal FAQ. Microsoft’s July 31 Insider blog post now names them.
If you run Insider lab rings, the action is the same as before: compare winver to the table below, take the July 31 update, and finish before August 11. The only new wrinkle this week is that Beta picked up the alternate and smaller taskbar options — worth a look if you pilot line-of-business UI on Insider builds.
Minimum builds per channel (as of July 31, 2026)

Any build at or above the row for your channel carries the renewed flight certificate. Anything below does not, even if winver is being optimistic about the expiration year — the FAQ explicitly warns about a false-positive expiration display, so trust the build number over the date.
For Experimental Future Platforms, 29634.1000 has carried the renewed cert since July 27; the newer 29639.1000 also qualifies but the floor is the earlier build.
Taskbar positions land on Beta
The alternate taskbar position feature — top, left, right, or bottom — was already on Experimental. With Beta Build 26220.9022, it’s now testable on the Beta channel too. Setting path: Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Taskbar behaviors.
Two caveats worth knowing before you build test cases on it:
- Tooltips, flyouts, and animations re-anchor to whichever edge the taskbar sits on. If your LOB app hard-codes to a bottom-origin popup, this is the build where you find out.
- Smaller taskbar is only supported in top and bottom positions. Auto-hide and touch-optimized taskbar are not yet supported in alternate positions, and Search box / Ask Copilot anchoring is still in progress.
You don’t need to pilot this on production-adjacent machines. But if you have a Beta lab device and a quarterly UI-review cycle, the alternate taskbar is worth an hour of regression this month.
Operator checklist
- Inventory each Insider device: which channel, which core (winver tells you both).
- Compare the build number to the table above for that channel/core.
- If below the minimum: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and install before August 11, 2026.
- If the device is on Beta and touches LOB UI: move the taskbar to each of the four edges once, click through your app’s flyouts and tooltips, note anything off.
- Repeat for each Insider device independently — the FAQ is explicit that each device updates on its own.
What this is not
This is not a production-fleet story. Flight certificates only affect Windows Insider Preview builds, not GA Windows. If nothing in your environment is on the Beta or Experimental ring, there is nothing to do here on August 11.
This is also not the March quality-commitment roadmap post. That’s a separate piece about broader Windows quality work and doesn’t change any action items for Insider lab operators this week.
