Microsoft Entra and Personal Account Sign-In Screens to Feature Fluent Design Backgrounds by September 2025

by ailona•July 31, 2025

Microsoft is updating the default background for Microsoft Entra and personal account sign-in screens starting August 2025. This visual refresh aligns with Fluent design principles, offering a cleaner, consistent, and distraction-free authentication experience—no action needed from users or admins.

Microsoft Entra Authentication Gets a Fresh New Look

Microsoft is rolling out a sleek new default background image for its Entra and consumer authentication screens. This update kicks off a broader modernization of the sign-in experience, aiming for a cleaner, distraction-free interface that users will instantly recognize and trust.

What’s New?

Starting August 2025, personal Microsoft account users will see the updated sign-in background. Work and school accounts on Microsoft Entra will follow on September 29, 2025. The redesign aligns with Microsoft’s Fluent design language, ensuring consistent visuals across all authentication flows.

Importantly, this is a purely visual update. No functionality changes or admin actions are required. The new background will automatically replace the old one unless a company has custom branding, which will continue to override the default image.

“When our experiences look and feel consistent, it gives all users a familiar experience that they know and trust.” – Megna Kokkalera, Product Manager

Major Updates: Dark Mode & Consistency

Microsoft is also introducing full dark mode support for personal Microsoft accounts soon after the new background launch. This dark mode will adapt based on your device and browser settings, enhancing usability in low-light environments.

The update is part of a larger effort to unify the authentication experience across personal and enterprise users. By modernizing the look and feel, Microsoft hopes to set a positive tone right from the first user interaction.

What You Need to Know

  • No action needed from users or admins; the update is automatic.
  • Company branding still overrides the default background for work/school accounts.
  • Microsoft Entra External ID tenants won’t see this change.
  • Dark mode support coming soon for personal accounts.
“We’ve already engaged with over 300 customers, using their targeted feedback to actively shape the future of Microsoft Entra’s authentication UX.” – Mike Scari, Principal Product Manager

The Road Ahead for Microsoft Entra Authentication

This update marks just the beginning of Microsoft’s journey to enhance authentication UX. Customer feedback plays a huge role in shaping future improvements. Expect more consistent, user-friendly, and secure sign-in experiences as Microsoft continues to innovate.

Stay tuned for upcoming features and enhancements that will make signing in smoother and more intuitive across all Microsoft platforms.
