Microsoft Rolls Out New Message Trace in Exchange Online
Microsoft just announced the general availability (GA) of the revamped Message Trace feature in Exchange Online. Starting mid-June 2025, admins worldwide will get default access to this improved tool via the Exchange admin center (EAC). The rollout completes by July, marking a big step for Exchange Online users.
What’s New with the Message Trace?
The new Message Trace experience brings a fresh design and enhanced performance. It also offers feature parity with the previous version, but with smoother navigation and faster results. Admins can find it under Exchange admin center > Mail flow > Message Trace.
“We received a lot of great feedback on the new message trace design, performance, and feature parity throughout Public Preview.”
Besides the UI improvements, Microsoft introduced updated PowerShell cmdlets: Get-MessageTraceV2
and Get-MessageTraceDetailV2
. These replace the older Get-MessageTrace
and Get-MessageTraceDetail
cmdlets, offering better functionality and integration.
Important Deprecation Timeline
Microsoft will maintain both old and new Message Trace interfaces and cmdlets for several months to help admins transition smoothly. However, starting September 1, 2025, the legacy Message Trace UI and cmdlets will begin deprecation worldwide.
Additionally, Reporting Webservice support for pulling Message Trace data will also phase out from the same date. This means any automation relying on the old cmdlets or Reporting Webservice needs updating.
“The old Message Trace interface and cmdlets will begin deprecating for our WW customers starting September 1st, 2025.”
Note that this timeline applies only to the worldwide environment. Separate schedules will be announced later for GCC, GCC-High, DoD, and other sovereign clouds.
How to Prepare for the Change
If you haven’t switched to the new Message Trace UI yet, now’s the time. Microsoft recommends migrating all automation scripts to the new cmdlets by the end of August 2025. This ensures uninterrupted message tracing and reporting.
Admins using Reporting Webservice for Message Trace data should also move to the new PowerShell cmdlets. The official documentation for these new cmdlets will be available by GA, helping you get started quickly.
Final Thoughts
The new Message Trace in Exchange Online is a welcome upgrade, focusing on speed, usability, and future-proofing. Transitioning before September 2025 will save headaches and keep your mail flow monitoring sharp.
Stay ahead by exploring the new Message Trace today and sharing feedback through the Exchange admin center. Microsoft’s messaging team is clearly listening.
