Evolving the Copilot Key Experience for Commercial Organizations
Microsoft has made significant changes to the Copilot key experience for commercial users. This update is crucial for IT admins and organizations using Windows 11.
What’s New?
In January 2024, Microsoft introduced the Copilot key on new Windows 11 PCs. This marks the first major keyboard update in nearly three decades. Initially, the key was designed to invoke Copilot in Windows. However, the focus has shifted to better serve commercial users.
“The Copilot key experience has evolved to better address your feedback and needs,” said Reanne Wong from Microsoft.
Major Updates
Copilot in Windows has been removed for commercial users. Now, the Microsoft Copilot app is only available to those using a Microsoft account. IT admins must ensure employees using a Microsoft Entra account can still access Copilot. The recommended solution is to remap the Copilot key to open the Microsoft 365 app.
New Windows 11 devices will default to this configuration during the out-of-box experience (OOBE). Pressing the Copilot key will directly launch Copilot within the Microsoft 365 app. This is the ideal setup for all commercial organizations.
Existing Devices and Key Mapping
For existing Windows 11 PCs, the Copilot key mapping remains unchanged as of the October 2024 security update. Users will still access the Copilot app, which is now solely for consumer use. If they sign in with a Microsoft Entra account, they will be redirected to the browser version of Microsoft Copilot.
“For the optimal experience, enterprise users should update the target of the key to the Microsoft 365 app,” Wong advised.
What’s Important to Know
Organizations should pin the Microsoft 365 app to the taskbar for easy access. If the app has been uninstalled, it can be reinstalled from the Microsoft Store. To avoid confusion, it is advisable to uninstall the standalone Copilot app.
Policies are available to configure the Copilot hardware key. Documentation for these policies can be found in the WindowsAI Policy CSP. This ensures that organizations can manage the Copilot experience effectively.
In summary, these updates are essential for enhancing productivity and security in commercial environments. IT admins should act promptly to implement these changes.
