Siemens and Microsoft Join Forces to Scale Industrial AI

On October 24, 2024, Siemens and Microsoft announced significant advancements in their collaboration on the Siemens Industrial Copilot. This partnership aims to enhance industrial automation, making it more efficient and capable of handling demanding environments.

What’s New?

The Siemens Industrial Copilot has been upgraded to leverage Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. This integration allows the Copilot to meet rigorous manufacturing requirements. Currently, over 100 companies, including Schaeffler and thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering, are already utilizing this technology to streamline operations.

“The collaboration between Siemens and Microsoft marks a pivotal moment in the industrial sector; one where AI Transformation becomes a cornerstone for innovation and operational efficiency,” said Judson Althoff, Microsoft’s Chief Commercial Officer.

Major Updates

With more than 120,000 engineers accessing the Copilot, this tool is designed to upskill workers in programming with Gen AI. The rollout of the Copilot will expand globally in 2025, starting with thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering.

Siemens has made this AI capability easily accessible through the Siemens Xcelerator open digital business platform. This move is expected to empower companies to enhance resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability.

“Together with Microsoft we scale industrial AI, empowering our customers throughout the industry to become more resilient, competitive and sustainable,” stated Cedrik Neike, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries.

What’s Important to Know

Since its launch in July 2024, the Siemens Industrial Copilot has already demonstrated its potential. Engineers can create panel visualizations in just 30 seconds and generate code that requires minimal adaptation. This efficiency reduces manual effort and addresses the ongoing skilled labor shortage.

Moreover, the chat function provides instant answers, eliminating lengthy searches for information. This capability allows companies to focus on driving productivity and innovation.

Transforming Battery Quality Assurance

A notable application of the Copilot is in battery quality assurance. Thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering is using the Copilot to develop automated systems for battery production. This technology integrates sensors and cameras to monitor battery cell quality, ensuring reliability in electric vehicles.

As Dr. Volkmar Dinstuhl of thyssenkrupp AG noted, “Siemens Industrial Copilot will prospectively ease our workload and address the pressing challenges of labor shortages.”

Siemens will provide further insights into the Industrial Copilot at the SPS expo in Nuremberg, Germany, in November 2024. Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative technology!
