Microsoft Photos App Update: Experience AI-Powered Super Resolution and OCR for Enhanced Productivity

Posted by

Microsoft has rolled out an exciting update for the Photos app, introducing super resolution and OCR support for Windows Insiders on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Super resolution enhances images up to 8x their original size using AI, while OCR allows users to extract text from photos easily. This update aims to boost productivity and improve user experience.

Exciting Updates in Microsoft Photos for Windows Insiders

Microsoft has just rolled out a significant update to the Photos app, and it’s packed with innovative features. This update is specifically designed for Windows Insiders using Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Let’s dive into the details!

What’s New: Super Resolution Feature

One of the standout features in this update is the introduction of super resolution. This AI-driven technology enhances and enlarges images up to eight times their original size. It’s a game-changer for anyone looking to improve low-quality photos or prepare images for large prints.

“Super resolution is perfect for improving low-quality photos, preparing photos for large prints or displays.”

Utilizing the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on Copilot+ PCs, super resolution processes images quickly and efficiently. Users can access this feature directly from the Photos Editor, allowing for rapid enhancements.

OCR Support: A Productivity Boost

Another major update is the addition of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) support. This feature allows users to easily extract text from images. Whether it’s from documents, notes, or screenshots, OCR detects text and enables you to copy it directly to your clipboard.

“OCR provides a quick and easy way to extract text from images in the Photos Viewer.”

This functionality supports over 160 languages and can be accessed via a dedicated icon when text is identified. It’s a fantastic tool for improving productivity and managing information captured in photos.

Other Notable Improvements

In response to user feedback, Microsoft has also introduced single-click support in the Gallery. Now, users can open individual images with just one click, streamlining navigation. Additionally, the Zoom feature has received enhancements, allowing large images to resize automatically within the Viewer window.

Bug fixes for the Image Creator and Restyle Image features have been implemented, improving overall quality for Copilot+ PC users.

How to Access the Update

To take advantage of these new features, ensure your app is updated to version 2024.11100.17007.0 or higher via the Microsoft Store. The rollout is currently in progress, so patience may be required.

As always, Microsoft encourages user feedback. Share your thoughts through the Feedback Hub (Win + F) under Apps > Photos.
