Bing has introduced new options for webmasters to control the use of their content in Bing Chat. This AI-powered chat platform allows webmasters to choose how their content is used and displayed. They can use NOCACHE and NOARCHIVE tags to determine if their content is included in Bing Chat answers and used in training Microsoft’s generative AI foundation models.
Control Your Content in Bing Chat: New Options for Webmasters
Webmasters now have more control over how their content is used in Bing Chat, thanks to new features introduced by Microsoft. This development is part of Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to creating a healthy web ecosystem in the AI era.
Reinventing Search with AI
A few months ago, Microsoft announced its vision to reinvent search with AI-powered Bing, promising better search results and more helpful answers. The new chat experience has been well-received, and Microsoft continues to seek industry feedback to improve its offerings.
Addressing Webmaster Concerns
In response to concerns raised by webmasters and publishers about content control, Microsoft has introduced new features that allow more control over content usage in Bing Chat and for training Microsoft’s generative AI foundation models.
What’s New?
Webmasters can now choose how to implement controls on their content. No action is needed to remain in Bing Chat and benefit from AI’s ability to generate more helpful answers and increase ranking opportunities.
“Content without NOCACHE tag and without NOARCHIVE tag may be included in Bing Chat answers and will benefit from AI’s ability to generate more helpful answers and to increase your ranking opportunities in Bing Chat.”
Content with the NOCACHE tag may be included in Bing Chat answers, but only the URL, Snippet, and Title will be displayed. Content tagged NOARCHIVE will not be included in Bing Chat answers or linked to in the answers.
Preserving Search Result Visibility
Microsoft reassures publishers that content with the NOCACHE or NOARCHIVE tag will still appear in Bing search results, ensuring that Bing users can still discover web content.
Strict Control for Webmasters
Webmasters who want strict control over their content can use the NOCACHE option. For paywall articles, Microsoft recommends adding the NOCACHE value to the NOARCHIVE value.
“Webmasters can set the NOCACHE value additionally to the NOARCHIVE value.”
Microsoft remains committed to collaborating with the industry on future AI standards and will continue to communicate with publishers and the web ecosystem to ensure a smooth transition to these standards.
