Windows 365 Cloud Apps: What’s New?

Microsoft just dropped a game-changer for Windows 365 users. The new Windows 365 Cloud Apps feature is now in private preview. It lets organizations stream individual apps securely from the cloud—no need for a full Cloud PC per user anymore. This is huge for enterprises aiming to simplify app delivery and cut costs.

Since Windows 365 launched in 2021, it’s been all about streaming full Windows desktops anywhere. Now, Microsoft is shifting gears to focus on app-level streaming, which means more flexibility and efficiency.

Major Updates & Features

Windows 365 Cloud Apps lets IT admins assign specific apps to users rather than entire desktops. This is perfect for frontline, seasonal, or remote workers who only need select apps. Plus, it integrates smoothly with Microsoft Intune for easy management.

Admins create provisioning policies that define whether users get a full desktop or just app access. Cloud PCs run in shared mode, meaning multiple users share licenses non-concurrently. For example, two licenses mean two Cloud PCs, but many users can share them one at a time.

“Windows 365 Cloud Apps is designed for enterprise customers whether they’re experienced with virtual desktop infrastructure or just starting their journey.”

Currently, apps streamed must come from the Start menu or custom images, but more sources will be supported soon.

What IT Admins Need to Know

Setting up Windows 365 Cloud Apps is straightforward. Admins create a provisioning policy with the “app-only” experience type. Then, assign Cloud PCs in shared mode to user groups. Security policies applied to the Cloud PCs automatically protect the streamed apps.

This setup helps accelerate migration from on-premises VDI to cloud-based solutions. It also streamlines app delivery for diverse user scenarios without sacrificing control.

The End-User Experience

Users access their apps via the Windows App, which acts as a secure gateway. Apps like Microsoft Edge or Word run from the same Cloud PC but appear as if they’re local. This seamless integration boosts productivity and feels natural.

“When connecting from Windows App on Windows, cloud-delivered apps look just like local apps, seamlessly integrating with users’ local desktops.”
