Microsoft is set to enhance the out-of-box experience (OOBE) for Windows 11 devices by allowing organizations to enable quality updates during setup. This new policy, launching in mid-2025, gives IT admins control over update management, ensuring devices are secure right from the start. Existing update settings will sync, streamlining the process for organizations.

Exciting Updates for Windows 11 OOBE Experience
Microsoft is set to enhance the out-of-box experience (OOBE) for Windows 11 devices in mid-2025. This update will allow organizations to enable quality updates during the initial setup of new devices. Here’s what you need to know!
What’s New?
With the upcoming policy, administrators can manage whether new Windows 11 devices receive quality updates during OOBE. This feature is available for devices running version 22H2 and higher. You can configure this setting via Windows Autopilot, ensuring a smooth setup process.
“This change will help ensure devices in your organization are secure out of the box.”
Major Updates to Expect
One significant aspect of this update is the synchronization of existing quality update settings. This includes update deferrals and pause policies. As a result, only the latest approved security updates will be offered during OOBE. This means your entire fleet can stay on the same approved version without hassle.
If your organization doesn’t use Autopilot through Microsoft Intune, don’t worry. You can still disable quality updates during OOBE by adjusting the Group Policy settings. This policy will also be available as a mobile device management (MDM) policy.
What’s Important to Know?
It’s crucial to note that this new policy does not apply to OOBE Zero Day Package (ZDP) updates. Additionally, there will be no changes to the overall OOBE experience itself. The average time for the update process is around 20 minutes, though this can vary based on several factors.
“You are in control over Windows updates thanks to your feedback.”
